A captured back sits in a groove or rabbet, set in from the rear to leave a void for an uneven wall or pipes — the interior gets shallower by the same amount. An applied back sits behind the carcass and adds its thickness to the physical depth.

Hangs off the floor

A wall unit is fixed this far above the floor; 0 stands the section on it. It moves no board and changes no size — it is where the section hangs, not how it is made — but a front that runs on below the carcass needs the room, and a section placed in a canvas starts at this height.
